Explain a fraction product
For 2/3 × 3/4, multiply to get 6/12, then reduce to 1/2. A rectangle divided into thirds in one direction and quarters in the other can show the overlapping part. For division, 1/2 ÷ 1/4 asks how many quarters fit into a half: two. This gives meaning to the reciprocal procedure instead of treating it as an unexplained rule.
Watch for inconsistent ratio changes
An equivalent ratio changes both terms by the same factor. Thus 2:3 becomes 6:9 when both terms are multiplied by three; adding three to each term does not preserve the relationship. In an unknown-value equation, apply the inverse operation and substitute the proposed answer back into the original equation. In mixed fraction-decimal work, settle on a common representation before calculating.
