Grade 2 math facts
Extend addition and subtraction to written columns and begin multiplication tables. Work through small groups of tables before mixing them. This level also introduces halves and quarters, connecting equal groups to simple fractions.

- Two-digit column addition
- Column addition with carrying
- Two-digit column subtraction
- Column subtraction with borrowing
- Addition beyond 100
- Subtracting from hundreds
- 5 and 2 times tables
- 3 and 4 times tables
- 6 and 7 times tables
- 8, 9 and 1 times tables
- Mixed times tables
- Multiples of 10 × 1-digit
- Halves and quarters
Connect columns and equal groups
For 36 + 27, combine the ones to get 13, then exchange ten ones for a ten: the answer is 63. For multiplication, arrange four rows of five objects to show 4 × 5 = 20. These are different procedures, so choose one focus for a round instead of switching topics whenever an answer feels slow. Explain the exchange or the equal groups before practicing recall.
Watch for unrecorded carries and table patterns
A missing carried ten can turn a correct ones calculation into an incorrect total. Have the learner name the tens after the exchange. In times tables, memorizing a sequence may work until questions arrive in mixed order. Try a single fact out of sequence and ask for an array or related fact as a check. For quarters, verify that the four parts are equal, not merely that there are four pieces.
Preparing for Grade 3
The multiplication-table groups lead toward mixed recall, multiplication by tens and later division. Written addition and subtraction lead toward larger numbers. Halves and quarters establish equal-part language for later fraction calculations. If a learner struggles with a new Grade 3 procedure, return to the particular fact group or place-value skill involved rather than repeating every Grade 2 topic.
